RUSSI MODY : THE MAN WHO ALSO MADE STEEL

Russi Mody was a recipient of the prestigious Padma Bhushan award. He had been associated with Tata Steel for more than 50 years. His biography is particularly interesting because of his impressive rise to success in the industrial house where he was on a pedestal for at least three full decades. During this time, he had also managed to win the love and affection of all the people that he was dealing with.

This biography on Russi Mody talks about how he became extremely successful in life and as a businessman. His heroes were JRD Tata and the American Industrial giant, Henry Ford. He would try and bring out their qualities in his behavior and work because of their nobility and vision. He admired qualities like candour, humility, compassion, consistent hard work, determination, sincerity and punctuality. He would try to imbibe theses qualities among his co-workers. Russi was born to Sir Homy Modi and Lady Jerby on January 17, 1918. His full name was Rustomji Hormusji. His parents would fondly call him Russi, and an astrologer had once predicted Russi would grow up to have a luxurious life and that his fortunes would roll.

His mother, Lady Jerby, was born amidst affluence and values which she tried to impart to her three sons. She was a major influence in Russi’s life. Even at 90 years, he would still revere to every word that she ever spoke to him. His father was quite the softie, but he too had his values rooted. Russi studied in India until his parents decided to send him to England. He was interested in history, and grew especially fond of Napoleon Bonaparte who became his role model. Upon returning to India, he visited the Director-in-Charge of Tata Steel in Jamshedpur. He was offered the job of an office assistant that brought him under the direct guidance of JRD Tata, as desired by his father.
