THE MURDER ON THE LINKS
The Murder on the Links centers around Agatha Christie’s character Hercule Poirot. Poirot receives a letter from France with a frantic post-script, which says ‘For God’s sake, please come’. But he arrives too late, as the man who had written to him has been murdered. His body was found stabbed, lying face down, in a shallow grave in the golf course nearby. The victim is Paul Renauld. His wife was discovered bound and gagged, and she tells the police that her husband was taken away by two masked men. The detective in charge of the investigation is soon convinced that the murder was committed by the victim’s son, Jack. Poirot has his doubts, and the two challenge each other on who is going to solve the case first. Is Jack really the culprit, and did he kill his father because he objected to Jack’s wish to marry the beautiful young Marthe Daubreuil? Or does the plot run deeper and has its root in a past crime, almost two decades old? What is the relationship between Paul Renauld and his recent neighbor, Madame Daubreuil? Why does Poirot think the story of the kidnapping by masked men reminds him of something very similar years before? In the end, Poirot manages to keep his moustache, as he wins the challenge, and Hastings finds the love of his life in a brave young woman who plays a vital role in the story.
