Throughout Asia today, there is a new focus on the role played by small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the broader process of economic development. Once considered a relatively unimportant aspect of the economy, SMEs are increasingly viewed by government policy makers and international donors alike as a critical sector for generating economic growth.
