The Miniature Pinscher is a small breed of dog, originating from Germany. The breed's earliest ancestors may have included the German Pinscher mixed with Italian greyhounds and dachshunds.
Historical artifacts and paintings place the Min Pin as a very old breed, but factual documentation began less than 200 years ago, leaving his actual origins to debate. The Miniature Pinscher is reported to include the Dachshund and Italian Greyhound among its ancestors. Many historians and those who have researched the background of the breed agree that this heritage is most likely, adding the shorthaired German Pinscher to the family tree.
Active, curious and entertaining, the Miniature Pinscher is not for the peaceful household. Most Miniature Pinschers burn much of their energy playing indoors and do not require large spaces to exercise.
Slender and graceful, yet strong, the miniature pinscher is essentially a square breed. Its most distinctive features are its high stepping, hackney gait, seen in no other breed, and its unrivaled animation.
The Miniature Pinscher, "minpin" to its friends, is one of the taller toys, ranging from 10 to 12 1/2 inches. The weight is comparatively low, however, at around 8 to 10 pounds (4 to 5 kilograms). The coat is short and smooth.
The Miniature Pinscher is a perpetual motion machine, a spitfire among dogs. Cocky, brash, curious and impetuous, these dogs are their own three-ring circus. They have been dubbed the "king of toys," a particularly fitting name not only because of their king complexes, but because they adore toys, toys and more toys. The person who shares his or her life with a minpin is never bored.
True to their terrier heritage, these dogs can be scrappy with other dogs and enjoy a chance to play vermin hunter. Miniature Pinschers can be so involved in their own affairs that they ignore your commands. Some would even call them stubborn. This is not a breed that can be let off the lead safely.
Miniature Pinschers are forever on the move. This is good if you like activity and entertainment; this is bad if you already have a hectic household or like peace and quiet. This is among the most active of all breeds; fortunately, most minipins can burn off much of their energy playing indoors and do not require wide-open spaces to exercise.
Coat care is wash and wear.
